Visa & Entry Guide for Canadian Fans
Good news: Canadians have it easy. No ESTA, no visa required for the USA. Here's everything you need to know about entry requirements for World Cup 2026.
🇺🇸 Travelling to the USA
No ESTA required for Canadians ✅
Canadian citizens do not need an ESTA or a US visa to enter the United States. You only need a valid Canadian passport (or enhanced driver's licence for land/sea crossings). ESTA is only required for citizens of Visa Waiver Program countries — Canada is not in that program because Canadians don't need a visa at all.
What you need to enter the USA
- 🛂 Valid Canadian passport — required for all air travel. Valid for your full trip duration.
- 🚗 Enhanced Driver's Licence (EDL) — accepted for land and sea crossings only (BC, Alberta, Ontario, Manitoba, Quebec EDLs)
- 📄 NEXUS card — accepted at all crossings, speeds up border processing
Border crossing tips
- ⏰ Cross early or late — avoid peak travel times around match days
- 📱 Download the CBSAFocused app for Canadian border re-entry to speed up your return
- 💵 Declare all goods over $800 CAD when returning to Canada
- 🚫 Do not bring cannabis across the US border — it remains federally illegal in the US
- 🍺 Alcohol limits: 1.14L (40oz) duty-free returning to Canada
Land border crossings from Canada to USA
If driving to US host cities, these are the main crossings near World Cup venues:
- 🇨🇦→🇺🇸 Windsor–Detroit (Ambassador Bridge or Detroit-Windsor Tunnel) — for Midwest US cities
- 🇨🇦→🇺🇸 Niagara Falls — for US Northeast (Boston, New York)
- 🇨🇦→🇺🇸 Peace Arch (BC/Washington) — for Seattle and Pacific Northwest
🇲🇽 Travelling to Mexico
Canadian passport holders: no visa required for Mexico ✅
Canadian citizens can visit Mexico for up to 180 days without a visa. You'll receive a Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMM) tourist card on arrival — either on the plane or at the airport. Keep this card for your entire stay, as you'll need to return it on departure.
Mexico entry tips for Canadians
- 📋 Fill in the FMM tourist card on the plane — saves time at immigration
- 💊 Carry enough prescription medication for your trip with original packaging and a doctor's note
- 🔔 Register your trip with the Government of Canada Travel Registry
- 💵 Mexico City host matches are in Mexican Pesos (MXN) — see our CAD exchange guide
📱 Staying Connected in the USA
Canadian phone roaming in the USA can cost $10–15 CAD/day with most carriers. For extended trips, a US eSIM is far more economical — you can buy one before you leave Canada and activate it on arrival.
